New Resource – 90 Day Tithing Challenge Response Card

In a previous post, I outline the details of our annual 90 day tithing challenge, an important part of our stewardship teaching. You can check out the post HERE.

Today, I wanted to add the “90 Day Tithing Challenge Response Card” to my Resources Page. Click here to download the card.

Here it is …

I guess we don’t want to highlight that one as on option, knowing that people will just toss the card if they decide not to participate. Again, this is something you may want to adjust based on your understanding or your church culture.

I’ve never really calculated the percentage. We see a “bump” definitely, maybe 10-15%?

I’d say you should adjust based on the culture of your church and what your finance team can live with.

I think it’s important that people are signing something that they view as a big deal and somewhat “binding,” sort of like signing a membership covenant, leadership application/agreement, etc.

    Make sense?

oh, and another question kevin. have you considered putting another box along the lines of “i am not going to accept the 90 day challenge” or something similar?

    and another:
could you share what % your giving has gone up typically when you do this?

  • carl kuhl

kevin, in your experience do you think it would be okay to put the “requirements”/fine print in the sermon instead of on the card? it sounds too contract-y to me, like the end of a car commercial. i’m loving the overall idea though and figuring out how we can do it.

Our follow up is all on the front end. We send everyone who takes the challenge a letter thanking them for their participation. The letter also encourages them to give online (part of our overall online giving promotion).

That’s it. The 90 day period gets over. Some continue some don’t.

Again, I’m not recommending our method. I acknowledge that a more comprehensive strategy is needed.

Care to elaborate on what your ‘follow up’ consists of? We plan to hand out a resource (40 Day Spiritual Journey to a More Generous Life maybe?). In addition we have a check box for them to be contacted to meet with a member of our finance team to talk about budgeting and simple money management.

    Nathan,

Other than some initial follow up, we don’t really do anything with the information. Perhaps we should.

We are working on developing and implementing a “donor development strategy,” which could include some actions along the lines you suggest.

I’m curious to know if you use the information ultimately gained from this for anything else. For example, is the final amount of giving for each person (after the 90 days) used for future budgeting of the church? Or if the giving is strong for the first month (for a particular donor), but then tapers off the next month, does the church notify (to remind or otherwise) the donor that the amount of giving has dropped?

    Definitely!

I suspected that it was low. That is cool.

  • http://www.executivepastoronline.com/ Kevin M. Stone

Very few, if any. I think we’ve only had 2 requests in more than 4 years of doing this!

  • http://twitter.com/chriskear Chris Kear

Thanks Kevin. What is the average number or % of people each year that request a refund?

    Josh,

Sounds great! Let us know how it goes …

  • Josh

Thank you for this resource! The only changes we made were 1) in 2nd bullet point, we changed ‘paid’ to ‘given’. And 2) we aren’t allowing cash donations. A large percentage of our giving is already done online and we expect that trend to be the vast majority soon as we market card swipe and online giving (one time and recurring) options.
We start the challenge 2/2. Will keep you posted!
