Church Leadership And Infrastructure Development

Do You Read Novels?

Do You Read Novels Do You Read Novels?I have to say most of the reading I’ve done for many years has been non-fiction, mostly leadership books and stuff on how to “do church” better.

A while back, though, a friend of mine recommended one of Vince Flynn’s novels, Transfer Of Power. It’s the 3rd book in a series he’s written about Mitch Rapp, a CIA operative who gets into all kinds of cool stuff. I finished the book a while back (in between non-fiction stuff) and I just started another one.

American Assassin, the 1st book in the series. I decided to go back and start at the beginning. I guess this and the 2nd book in the series, Kill Shot, would be considered prequels.

Anyway, I’m curious about how many of you mix some fiction into your reading schedule. Click here to leave a comment.

    Mike,

Makes sense to me. I read a bunch of Clancy when I was in the Navy. Not much since then, though.

I’ve pretty much always got a fiction book going as well as other reading. Flynn is one of the best, as is Cussler. I also like Tom Clancy and Ted Bell, with Berry and Baldachi having some good stuff too. Fiction gives my mind a break, provides another level of connection with people and helps my teaching/preaching by being more aware of the movement of a story. Plus, it’s just fun.

    Kraig,

Interesting. I’ll have to check out Clive Cussler!

I am not ashamed – I read fiction! Some seasons I just need to rest my mind and soul so I can sleep and be refreshed in a little more of a “mindless way. On vacations, I don’t usually read non-fiction as that really doesn’t refresh me – it tends to cause me to come up with new ideas, thus really turning into a working vacation. I don’t carry my cell phone on vacation and my wife checks voicemail and passes on in her own words what I absolutely need to know.

Clive Cussler has been my favorite fiction read for years – especially the “Dirk Pitt” series before he was co-writing with other authors. Clean books, with a Bond-like hero who is fun to follow. Interestingly, it was one of my very close aetheist friends who introduced me to the series. It really gave us another topic to connect us which was really good since we couldn’t really talk about faith all the time.

Makes sense to me. I have a little trouble with actually reading 1 book per month. Something else always gets in the way.

I have attempted to set a balanced schedule for reading and what I read. A general guideline for me is one book a month and then I rotate the type of books. Spiritual strengthing, leadership, business strategy, fiction, ect. I hate to choose this as an example but it is relevant and popular right now, the Hobbit is a great fiction book that shows many aspects of teamwork, leadership, and courage. There are many books thatthiscouldbesaid the same for.

Have pretty much dropped all nonfiction from my reading since high school… For better or worse, I guess?!
