I’ve talked with many church leaders in my travels and have ongoing contact with many as well. One of the “areas of challenge” that comes up from time to time is what the church leadership should do about divisive people in the church. We’ve managed to document a number of policies and procedures around here which tend to get documented on an “as needed” basis, unfortunately. One such policy documents CCV’s method for dealing with Church Discipline.
The bottom line is that the Bible tells us how to deal with divisive people in the church. Unfortunately, though, we don’t often deal with them as the Bible instructs. I think the biggest reason is that it’s unpleasant and often is avoided because of the inherent risks associated with confrontation in the church.
Our feeling is that it must be recognized, openly discussed by church leadership, and addressed with understanding, passion, and a spirit of restoration. Our feeling is also that it must be dealt with swiftly and consistently.
I recently posted our Church Discipline policy here on Executive Pastor Online. It’s listed on my Resources Page along with many other resources for church leaders. Take a look and let me know what you think.
